"The Big Dumb Bird" aka "The Wayward Emu"
My parents raised emus and Barbados sheep on their ten acre property in Grass Valley. They were fun for myself and my kids to observe. They are a very interesting bird.
My dad had a fenced area for the emus. Occasionally they would just wander around their property.
A face only a mother could love!
My dad had an incubator for the emu eggs. My friend labeled him “Ken, the baby emu killer”. He did not always have success hatching the chicks. The young emus did not all live a long life at my parent’s “Funny Farm”.
An emu egg is a beautiful emerald green color. The egg is approximately the size of a dozen chicken eggs. I fondly remember have a holiday breakfast and only using one egg for several people. And the egg is very thick and difficult to crack.
I love this photo of David feeding the emu and the sheep looking on patiently waiting for theirs.
I don't know much about emus either, but I find your story so funny that I'm curious to know more about them.
*I don't understand how I appear as the author of your story.
I have no idea how this happened, but this post is really from Dia. A Substack mystery of how she posted under Elizabeth's account...... Anyway, this was fun. I know nothing about emus so it was enjoyable to learn about them and see all the photos. Love that huge green egg!
