Hi Cathey I know I’m unable to attend the Substack live. I hope it’s okay that I put my thoughts here of my struggles with poems. I struggle with putting what I feel into poems. I also don’t want them to be full of lies. I have trouble understanding some poems as well. Though I do that I love to write. I was never very good at writing. I actually was horrible in writing. I always had trouble with commas periods and run on sentences. That’s why I have my mom you or my mom proofread my poems. Well thank you for letting me share my thoughts.
Shari, poems can be fictional as well as true-to-life depending on what you are writing about. You aren't lying if you are telling a story, just like in a novel. Other poems can be what YOU are feeling or experiencing yourself. I have trouble understanding what the author intended in some poems as well, but they are for us to interpret in our own way and pull from them what is meaningful to us. It's good to have someone edit for us if we struggle with grammar or spelling. Keep writing, Shari! As long as you enjoy it, it's worth doing! And thanks for sharing your struggles here as others might have some of the same!
